RESUME etc...
My name is Barbara Lawrence and I have the best job in the world! I am a lifelong learner with major interests in Physical Education, and related fields in the Natural Sciences. I am one of five children all of whom were raised by a wonderful woman. She was not able to finish her degree in Home Economics, but she impressed upon my siblings and me to pursue our dreams and to strive to improve and to encourage us by earning a college degree. I am married with two sons ages 25 and 21. I was a “stay-at-home” Mom and began taking classes at the local junior college when I transferred to a state university. I finished my BA in Kinesiology in 2002 from California State University, Long Beach. I completed my credential work in the fields of Kinesiology and Adapted Physical Education in 2003 and started to work for the Los Angeles Unified School District where I am currently an employee.
I am an active member of CAHPERD (California Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) since 2000. I have created a variety of programs for my students that include: St. Jude’s Hospital Trike -A –Thon, a school wide Elementary Field Day, field trips to the Deaf Olympics Southern California, and to the Cabrillo Beach Boy Scout Camp, and The Very Special Arts Festival, a fine arts program with the Los Angeles Unified School District. I have served on several school site committees such as the Marlton Search and Rescue, the Marlton Technology Committee, and I participate in the Harvest of the Month program – a part of the LAUSD Nutrition Network. I have presented at the CAHPERD 2009 Conference in Santa Clara, CA., the 2010 CAHPERD Conference in Ontario, CA., and I was a member on many committees for the 2006 National Adapted Physical Education Conference. I have conducted many in-service professional developments for the Los Angeles Unified School District at various school sites, and within the Related Services Unit with particular emphasis on supporting new teachers. I have collaborated with a University professor and an Adapted Physical Education colleague and presented at the 2003 National Adapted Physical Education Conference in San Diego, CA., as well as published an article found in Strategies Magazine in 2008 with colleague Susan Alexander, and Dr. Barry Lavay. I collaborated with California State University, Long Beach serving as a Master Teacher and mentoring a student teacher, collaborating and participating within LAUSD as a BTSA support provider, conducting professional development training within and outside the district. I was a recipient of the Sound Body Sound Mind Grant that provided a fitness facility for my school, and the Nike Go PE Grant, which provided my school with physical education equipment.
I am a High-Five coach, a High-Five Advisory Committee Member, and a National Board Certificate Candidate. I incorporate various strategies that support language curriculum that include ‘Word of the Week’, AEBPD (ASL, English, Bilingual, Professional Development), and RTII (Response to Instruction and Intervention) into my instruction. I teach students using American Sign Language and spoken English. I am known for my creativity, my energy, and my passion for teaching students of all ages and abilities. I am the California State Adapted Physical Educator of the Year (2010) and I am a nominee for the National Adapted Educator of the Year.
